Draft Day Two: Tidbits and Rumors Involving the Jets
The second day of the 2010 NFL Draft kicks off at 6pm EST tonight. Before I get into discussing today’s rounds, I want to touch on a few interesting developments that surfaced this morning.
First off, a lot of Jets fans were expecting the Jets to pick OLB Sergio Kindle last night with the 29th pick. Adam Schefter reported that Kindle might undergo micro-fracture knee surgery, which would leave him sidelined for his entire rookie season. This is obviously a major red flag, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him still available after the 2nd and 3rd rounds finish tonight. Some teams have even taken Kindle off their draft boards entirely.
Another report surfaced this morning that General Manager Mike Tannenbaum was on the phones last night trying to move up in the first round. The target was assumed to be offensive guard Mike Iupati. With the rumors circulating that the Jets are finished with Alan Faneca, it would make sense that the Jets would target an offensive guard high in the draft.
The Jets appear to be high on drafting an offensive line prospect to eventually replace Alan Faneca, but they also have needs on the defensive line, outside linebacker, and free safety. The Jets hold only one pick in tonight’s draft, the 29th pick in the 2nd round (61st overall). Two offensive line prospects that could be available when the Jets pick in the 2nd round are John Jerry from Ole Miss and Vladimir Ducasse from UMass. If the Jets want to go defense, they could target DT Linval Joseph of ECU, who would likely play defensive end in the Jets system.
The Jets only have 4 picks left (2nd, 4th, 6th, and 7th rounds) so they don’t have a lot of trade bait to move up in the draft. However, they could package picks along with players in order to move up or to simply stockpile an extra pick or two. In my opinion, some players that could be involved in a trade are Alan Faneca, Shaun Ellis, Bryan Thomas, and/or Leon Washington. Also, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Tannenbaum trading away a 2011 draft pick if the Jets see a player they like fall into the 3rd round.
With the Jets’ history of draft day trades, I would actually be surprised if the Jets didn’t make some sort of move today. I have a feeling Tannenbaum has something up his sleeve for tonight.
My Prediction- The Jets will make two picks tonight- Linval Joseph and John Jerry. The Jets will trade Faneca + our 4th rounder for a 3rd round pick. Crazy? Probably, but Mike T is running the show.
