Jets Draft Vladimir Ducasse, Cut Alan Faneca
As expected, the Jets are releasing 9 time Pro Bowler Alan Faneca. Faneca is due to make $7.5 million this season ($5.25 million guarenteed), so the Jets won’t be saving much by cutting ties with him. Faneca is still one of the league’s best run blocking guards, but his pass blocking has declined over the past few seasons. The Jets threw the ball less than any team in the league last year, and Faneca still gave up a league leading seven sacks in 2009.
The Jets went into the 2010 draft targeting a replacement for Faneca. Vladimir Ducasse, out of UMass, was selected 61st overall by the Jets. Ducasse (6′5, 332) was widely considered the second best guard prospect in the draft, after only Mike Iupati of Idaho. Ducasse has the size, strength, and athleticism to be successful in this league, but he is a little raw and needs to improve his handwork. Ducasse would appear to be the front runner to start in between C Nick Mangold and LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson. If the Jets feel like Ducasse needs a year to develop, they could go with a veteran free agent, or an in house option (Wayne Hunter or Matt Slausen).
The Jets have 3 picks in the final day of the draft (4th, 6th, and 7th rounds). The biggest needs for the Jets right now are all on the defensive side of the ball. The main position needs are outside linebacker, defensive end, and free safety. Both Ricky Sapp and Everson Griffen are still available and I would be surprised if they Jets passed on either one if they fall to the late 4th. Also, keep an eye on FS Kam Chancellor, out of Virginia Tech.
