Jets Continue to Sign UDFAs

The New York Jets have been actively signing players in the undrafted free agent market, hoping to add some young depth to the back end of their roster. The most notable signing is CB Donovan Warren, out of Michigan. Warren, once a first round prospect, slipped off the radar after a poor performance at the NFL Combine. Here’s a full list of UDFA signings that the Jets have made so far:

• SS Cory Reamer (Alabama)
• TE Jeff Cumberland (Illinois)
• S Marcus Ezoff (Cal) invited to mini-camp for tryout

On TE Jeff Cumberland:

Cumberland is a king-sized receiver who isn’t explosive out of his stance but displays good short-area quickness and has the ability to cleanly change directions. He does a nice job finding the ball over the middle and has the body control and coordination to adjust to poorly thrown passes. He knows how to set up corners and does a nice job changing speeds out of his breaks and finding soft spots underneath. But he isn’t explosive and lacks the speed to gain consistent separation out of his breaks and downfield. Cumberland has some natural receiving skills but will likely be asked to make the move to tight end or H-back at the next level since he possesses the athleticism to get down the seam and separate underneath.  -Rivals.com

On CB Donovan Warren:

The thing I love most about Warren is his confidence and intangibles. I really believe he will be a much better pro than college player because an NFL scheme and coaching staff will get the most out of him. He’s really flying under the radar and some team is going to get a steal in the second or third round. Scouts hate that he gives up big plays, but he can definitely improve on this in the NFL and I think there is too much unwarranted criticism. On WR Philip Kirkland:

(6′2″ 185 lbs) – Kirkland didn’t really show up until his third year at Bethune-Cookman when he had 9 catches for 91 yards. His biggest year came in 2008 when he had 25 catches for 428 yards and two touchdowns however his production dropped off significantly in 2009. Kirkland has had some experience on STS. Could see some time on special teams depending on how well he develops but Kirkland strikes me as more of a practice squader. -thejetsblog.com

On OG Charlie Tanner:

Tanner is a 5th year offensive lineman from the University of Texas. He was a two time All Big 12 honorable mention, and started 32 games at Texas. Tanner has decent size (6′4, 305 lbs) and can provide some depth to the Jets’ thin offensive line.

On DT Mick Williams:

Williams is described by his positional coach Greg Gattuso as “the heart of the defensive line”…has all the tools needed for an all-star senior season…a grizzled veteran whose strength and conditioning levels are at the highest of his career…a relentless performer in the trenches who thrives as both a run stopper and pass rusher. -PittsburghPanthers.com
