What the Jets Did During the Draft
After the 2009 season ended and I started researching the “Final 8/Final 4″ restrictions, I figured the Jets would be in for a quiet off-season- I should have known better. With general manager Mike Tannenbaum running the show, the Jets had one of the busiest off-seasons of any team in the league.
For the past few off-seasons, we’ve all watched the Jets sign marquee free agents and make trades for future Hall of Famers. The formula is simple, Tannenbaum works his magic and tries to fill all of the holes in the Jets’ roster so they can be as flexible as possible during the draft. This allows the Jets to select the best player available, rather than being forced to reach for a player based on a position need.
Going into the 2010 draft, I figured that the Jets would target a defensive end or a pass rushing outside linebacker with their first round pick. I know that Rex Ryan loves his cornerbacks, but with the off-season acquisition of CB Antonio Cromartie, I assumed the Jets would address the nickle situation in the later rounds of the draft. I’m sure that I wasn’t the only Jets fan that was a little surprised when I heard Roger Goodell announce that the Jets selected CB Kyle Wilson.
The more I look at the Jets draft, the more that I like it- and let me tell you why. When Rex Ryan was hired as the Jets’ head coach back before the 2009 season, he promised that the Jets would play great defense and run the ball well. If you look at the 2009 Jets, you can see that Rex lived up to his word. The biggest strengths of the Jets’ were their offensive line, their running game, and their pass defense.
The Jets ended up with four picks in the 2010 NFL Draft, and what did they do? They improved their offensive line, their running game, and their pass defense.
What the Jets did during the 2010 draft was improve on the team’s biggest strengths. By selecting Kyle Wilson, the Jets made the league’s highest rated pass defense better. When the Jets selected LG Vladimir Ducasse, FB John Conner, and RB Joe McKnight, they improved the NFL’s best rushing attack.
Rex Ryan has said it countless times, the formula for winning in this league is to play great defense and to run the ball well. When RB Shonn Greene and CB Donald Strickland got injured during the AFC Championship game, the Jets struggled due to a lack of depth at those positions. The Jets made sure they added enough talent at those positions during the off-season to prevent the Jets from losing their identity on either side of the ball.
